How do you differentiate your rye whiskey from comparably sourced product?ĮB: Even though our rye whiskey is distilled by MGP, it is produced, as I noted earlier, to our specific, proprietary recipe. JM: Roughly 90% of the rye whiskey bottled in the US is produced by either MGP in Indiana or Alberta Distillers in Calgary. When bartenders originally asked Tom Bulleit for a rye whiskey years ago, we saw an opportunity to give them what they wanted, and we knew MGP would be the right partner – and they still are today. JM: Any plans for Bulleit to distill its own rye whiskey or is the plan to continue to source from MGP?ĮB: We are proud to have MGP as a longstanding partner, distilling our rye recipe to our unique proprietary specifications, before our team of world class blenders, led by Andrew MacKay and Eboni Major, mingle it to perfection. Like its other rye expression, the whiskey is distilled at the MGP plant in Indiana. Bulleit Rye 12-Year-Old Straight American Whiskey uses the same mash bill as Bulleit Rye – 95% rye and 5% malted barley – with a minimum of 12 years of aging. ![]() Recently it introduced a 12 YO rye whiskey. It’s rye whiskey has been the best-selling rye whiskey brand in the world for the last 6 years. It quickly grew to one of the preeminent whiskey producers in the US.īulleit caught the rye whiskey revival early on, and successfully established itself as the premier producer of rye whiskey. It was organized by Tom Bulleit, a Kentucky lawyer, in 1987 and subsequently acquired by spirits giant Diageo. Recently I sat down with Ed Bello, Global Brand Director for Bulleit Frontier Whiskey. Sales of rye aged 8 years or more, a category that didn’t even register until recently, showed an even more dramatic increase. By 2018, rye whiskey sales had soared to over 1.057 million cases, a 12-fold increase. That was still a paltry $15 million in sales, about as much bourbon as was sold on a good weekend. By 2009, sales of rye whiskey had inched up to 88,000 9-liter cases, according to the Distillers Council of the US (DISCUS). Rye whiskey’s fortunes were about to turn, however. ![]() That year bourbon outsold rye whiskey by more than a 100 to 1 ratio. By 2006, rye sales had declined to virtually nothing. After the war ended, changes in tastes favored sweeter spirits, like bourbon, resulting in a steady decline in the demand for rye whiskey. With the advent of WW II many rye distillers in Maryland and Pennsylvania switched to producing ethanol for the war effort.
